Final Days in Kindergarten 2011-2012

We concluded our year in kindergarten with a study of poetry, and a summer glyph.  We also read Oh the Places You'll Go! by Dr. Seuss, and Three Little Ducks by Joy Cowley.

Many kindergartners were feeling a little anxious about starting first grade so we read Swimmy by Leo Lionni.  Kindergartners were able to make a text to self connection with the fish who were afraid to come out of the coral reef (kindergarten).  They were afraid of the big fish (first grade).  Swimmy helped them to realize that they could work together to face their fears.  Hopefully, the students understand that when they leave kindergarten and move to first grade, they are not alone.  They will go together and face a new adventure.  This has been an amazing year.  I am so grateful for all we have accomplished together!  I am confident that they will continue to learn and grow in the years ahead!

Here are the final pictures of our year in kindergarten 2011-2012...enjoy!

During the last week of school, the class was able to make a free choice to play any math center game.  It was fun to see the different choices made by students.

Hatching Chicks

Our class joined Mrs. Witkin's class to observe hatching chickens in an incubator.  The eggs were turned each day and when the time came, we watched them peck out of their shells.  It took the eggs about 21 days to hatch.

The incubator kept the temperature at 99.5 degrees and a bowl of water helped to keep the air moist.

The eggs were marked with an X on one side so we could keep track of turning the eggs each day.

Here are some pictures of this investigation.

We placed the eggs over a spot light to see if there was a chick growing inside.  If the egg glowed, there was no chick growing.  If the egg was dark, we knew there was a chick inside.

A chick was growing in this egg.
